Emergency Car Batteries and Starters
Posted 08/25/2010 by ragartragart in Car Features | Submit idea in this category
Dead Battery? Autos could still have a crank-starter. You know...the one where someone would stand in front of the car and crank the crankshaft? But instead of breaking your arm, a newer, better device could be permanently installed as an emergency starter, always available with the push of a button. Maybe spring loaded.

Great for people who are afraid to use jumper cables. You know those wind up flashlights. That's kind of the same idea, but on a much, much smaller scale.

toolguy16 (09/09/2010): I have one of those flashlights and use it all the time. I think my father used to have a radio that was powered by a hand-crank, seems rudimentary but there are situations like a dead car battery where mechanical energy would surely be helpful

Actually, couldn't the auto-makers install a permanent solar-charged battery into the body of every auto never to be thought of again?

I guess it depends on exactly how much power your dead battery needs to start up the first time. A hand cranked, small generator should surely do the trick, and would never get affected by weather or age. Love this
