Unique Biology Trip???
Posted 10 months ago by BrainWaves in Field Trips | Submit idea in this category
I'm a High School biology teacher with the problem that most people in my field have...keeping the students interested and motivated.

As a new school year begins, I'm trying to plan a unique and fun field trip at the end of the year. My students have to make the grades in order to qualify, and I don't think a traditional trip to the museum is enough motivation for them to hit the books. My colleague, who is a Physics teacher, takes his students to Six Flags every year to demonstrate how the laws of physics apply. Of course, his students look forward to this trip all year, and I would love to have a similar, biology-relevant trip, for my students to look forward to.

Can anyone think of a destination where Biology students can experience what they learned in class all year, yet have fun while doing it?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Feeding time at the Birch Aquarium here in San Diego has always been a thrill for me and the kids squeal with excitement, particularly when the moray eels shoot across the tank at the glass.

We actually do cover marine biology at one point in the year so that might actually not be such a bad idea.
I agree..botanical gardens are good in theory, but I just don't see my students getting geared for that.

Thanks for the advice! I'll start researching a few aquariums and "sea mammal shows" around the area.

Do you teach Marine Biology at all? How about taking them to a park like Sea World? You mentioned the Physics class goes to Six Flags. They have Dolphin and Whale shows as well..

You can also take them to botanical gardens, but not sure if that would excite anyone..
