Movie Script: America gets invaded

It seems that destruction on the homeland, namely New York City, has been a popular theme for movies lately, from the latest Godzilla and its sister movie Cloverfield to The Day After Tomorrow and I Am Legend. It's entertaining, scary, and lets just say it works in the modern day Hollywood where original scripts are hard to come by as it is.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty is a video game that explores an Alternate History idea of "what if World War II went differently." Alternate History is great, and there's a ton of Alternate History books out there but not many movies.

I'd be excited to see an Alternate History movie using modern CGI and other special effects to explore the idea of "What if America got invaded?" It could take place, like the video game, in the WWII error, or even modern day. Maybe a terrorist plot that went further than a BOOM followed by shock and awe. Maybe after the BOOM, they went a step further in deploying embedded foot soldiers to take advantage of our vulnerabilities after a catastrophe.

A war on American soil hasn't really been fully explored by Hollywood yet - there's a lot of room for play there.

"Streets of Fire" by Walter Hill was a movie with an alternate WWII history backstory, which wasn't much mentioned in the actual flick, and this sort of thing has been done in tv series such as Star Trek.

I love alternate history but it hasn't worked too well in the movies - too much brainless action, too little thought. Maybe a story needs some thoughtful action.  If you're going to show the invasion of NYC, then play up all the sites, buildings ect that would be familiar, and if you have familiar characters then have them do really surprising things.    It does take a bit of thought to make a good story.

It was done pretty well in Red Dawn back sometime in the '70s.  I wouldn't mind seeing a modern take on it though.  It could be an interesting exploration of American culture and politics.  Not to mention an awesome action movie.

Red Dawn was from 1984, actually.
