Gangland Concert
Posted 12/15/2009 by sarossell in Concerts | Submit idea in this category
Set up a stadium with a central stage and all of the local gangs with their best car stereos. Use several stereo transmitters to use the cars tuned to various frequencies to create a huge concert that celebrates the positive things about friendship and, more importantly, the common ground all gang members have; their heritage, religious beliefs, mothers, grandmothers with projected images, lasers and fireworks.

I have a feeling this would degrade into violence pretty darn quick.

sarossell (12/16/2009): You're probably right. But what about multiple stadiums in different states all connected by high-speed Internet? That would let the concert happen safely and probably with gangs that don't even know each other so they wouldn't care enough to kill each other.

There is nothing good about gangs.... Nothing good can possibly come from bringing a crowd of different gangs together for anything....

sarossell (02/24/2010): I sense a great deal of negative emotion in your comment. All things being the same, I would agree with you. However, the point of my idea is to change the status quo. These gangs are highly motivated and very energetic but with all the wrong purposes in mind. If all of that extreme energy were to be focused on common interests while keeping the gangs physically separate while using modern communications technology to bring them together, their natural competitiveness could shine. The contest would have to be structured in a way that would allow all gangs to win in separate categories so there would not be any "losers" to create enmity between gangs.
rexman (02/24/2010): That sounds like a lot of effort to make for a group of people who do not have any value for their life or the life of others....
sarossell (03/15/2010): Would it be more accurate to say that they have LESS value for other lives than their own as opposed to NO value at all? And if you can agree to that, then isn't it that true for all humans to some degree? The only failing gang members suffer is a lack of proper focus. To dismiss them outright as somehow less than human is inhumane in itself. Gang members do understand loyalty - to their gang. Just as you do with your friends and family. The gangs are just in a volatile and hostile environment. I wonder how you and a handful of your buddies would behave if placed in a hostile environment. Would you protect you and yours? I think so. I'm not defending gangland behavior by any means. But I do have hope in humanity when it comes to finding true purpose in life and seeing viable options other than territorial warfare and revenge. Gangs can so easily rally around a simple color (blue, red, etc). Imagine the energy they could put forth for something more tangible. Dismiss a people as animals and you become one yourself.

In my experience, the value that Gang members hold for human life (theirs or others) is just south of existing. How can you explain a group of people that walk around with weapons, drugs and committing crimes basically every chance that they have? To say that they live in hostile environments is making excuses for their behavior. There are people throughout history that had shown loyalty to a group or to an idea and just because there is loyalty present does not mean that it could be used for good.

sarossell (03/15/2010): It's all they know. It's the purpose that has been outlined for them by geographical, social, traditional, political, historical and sometimes even religious dictates. And again, I don't excuse their criminal behavior, I say they can be re-focused with proper direction and a more productive purpose. I refuse to ignore their humanity even if it must be in spite of them. They are ignorant, dangerous, angry...people. They know only what they have experienced. Should we just arrogantly look down upon them as if they were merely dumb animals and not take some responsibility if we think we are so much more intelligent than they? It's easy to angrily dismiss them. It's much more difficult to take a position toward positive change. If not this idea, then another. But whatever the idea, it has to include aspects of their culture and history. Otherwise, it's just a lame lecture by snooty "cracka's" trying to clean up THEIR neighborhood. These people have pride and love of family and respect for power. Surely, they can be shown how to express their pride, expand their family and recognize the power of others. Or should we just ignore them or hate them and be done with it because our intelligence fails us in finding (or even attempting) a solution?
