nature strip gardens in the suburbs
Posted 07/02/2010 by markimarku in Environment | Submit idea in this category
outside most houses in Australia is house is a stretch of grass from the property boundary to the road. most of these are covered with grass that needs to be mowed and sprayed and edge trimmed and raked... all noisy wastes of time energy and/or fuel.
it would be better to plant these "nature strips" with herbs, veges and fruit trees that people could harvest as they walk home. it would dramatically reduce the number of food miles consumed in a city and reintroduce children to the concepts of where food really comes from. it would also reduce waste and increase recycling as food scraps and paper could be composted for improving the soil.

The only problem I see with this is that after tending my garden for months, somebody would take it all. That would upset me.
How helpful was this?
