The Genetic Game
Posted 06/03/2008 by zboston3 in Game Ideas | Submit idea in this category
We all know Mr. Potato Head, that toy where you stick various pieces on to a head to make different faces/characters so to speak - evidently there are quite a few variations if you get enough pieces.

Nowdays biologists, geneticists, researchers talk about and are in fact doing the mixing of DNA from animals, plants, etc to make new things.  Almost Mr. P for real, but why not create a game in which you combine parts of different animals to make new ones.  Put wings on a horse, a beak on a lion, etc.  You could assign values and qualities to the pieces so that there would be rules and guidelines to mixing - err a reptilian characteristic of 80 pts can not be attached to mammalian characteristic of more than 50 pts, and so forth and so on.

This is the low tech option, but you could go high tech and make some sort of computer game out of it.  Then you could have really cool graphics, even explanations that would explain and comment on the science of various qualities and mixtures.  You could see in glorious color what putting feathers on a dog or donkey ears on a crocodile was like.

I remember a game someone showed me a few years back like this. I did some research - try the link www.microsoft.com/games/impossiblecreatures/

Thank you for that.  They seem to have gone to the trouble of creating a story and giving it some action - always good things for such an idea.  Still being second or third is not fatal if you do something better than the first guy.

Christopher Columbus was not the first explorer to find America, just the one most people followed.

I agree that this could be cool. However, we need to stear clear of putting everything on computer. Kids today do not need another computer game. Yes, to have a firm grasp on technology is a good thing, but when I was a kid, the most fun thing to do was to go out and play touch football or stickball. Now, kids go to their friends house to play video games. This game would be a great sort of "Scrabble" for kids. A chance for kids to be creative, have fun and learn the values of using their minds.
