Online prescriptions

After going to see the doctor, it's always such a pain that we have to drop off our own prescriptions at the drug store just to go back to pick them up later when they're ready. Why doesn't the health industry create some type of method where you can go home, enter or scan the prescription some how, maybe using bar codes etc. for security and simply go pick up the prescription when it's ready? Using serial numbers for the drugs and account numbers for the person would assure security and accuracy.

I've heard of the company ZixIt (symbol ZIXI) that has been experimenting with e-prescriptions, but it has not been passed yet.

I know most doctors in my area are now handling electronic submission to the pharmacy and then the pharmacy calls you when its ready to pickup...I myself like the idea of talking with the pharmacy just because i've have problems where the doctors office forgot i was allergic to penicillin

I think the government agencies are trying to get the doctors and hospitals to do something like this, particularly with allowing doctors to see what cheaper generic drugs might be prescribed.  But considering some of the errors that humans make, it's still nice to be able to talk to someone.
