Airport security... with what cameras?
Posted 01/05/2010 by eric in Precautions and Preventions | Submit idea in this category
December 24th's terrorist activity on board Northwestern airlines afforded only 1 picture of the entire activity to the media, and it was from a passenger's camera phone. If you think about the most recent flights you've taken, were there video cameras watching you?

The recovery of a "black box" seems so antiquated in today's age of Wi-fi and high tech gadgets. Why not have surveillance cameras on all flights that send packets of footage every 10 minutes or so via satellite to an archive somewhere? Wouldn't this make it so much easier to determine events leading up to plane failures, terrorist activity and other unlikely events?

That is an excellent idea! It would be very easy to implement and very affordable. Of course, there will be those who fight against installing cameras at all because they feel cameras are an invasion of their privacy, but if you're in public, how private can that be? I personally like cameras for security because I'm not one of the people causing security issues. I've even seen fake cameras have a positive effect on the behavior of teenagers because they thought they were being observed. Where's the harm in that?

Yes, this does seem like a good idea. However, rather than have it sent to a database that can be checked periodically, why not have monitors on this at all times? It works on a few levels. If you look at inner cities, there are very often closed circuit telivision systems that monitor activity on the street in order to aid police and I'm sure fire. Why not apply that to the air? Have people monitor these cameras all the time. What better way to fight off terror with the threat of IMMEDIATE response to any type of terror threat. Also, this would create more jobs in our society....
