Movies on Thumb Drives
Posted 12/27/2009 by BrainWaves in Other | Submit idea in this category
How long do you give it until DVDs become an obsolete form of media? I'm thinking movies will eventually all be on thumb drives, and TVs will have USB ports to plug the movies into. Think about how much space we would be saving without all the decks piled up beneath the television, not to mention all the wires behind the TV which we won't need anymore.

Well, point in fact, DVD's have been obsolete ever since the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle was decided. I agree that the most common connector will likely be used if such an idea were to come about, so USB is a no-brainer. But the cost to manufacture thumb drives is far more than even a Blu-Ray disk. Manufacturers will of course use the more affordable option. I like your idea, but until we can make extremely cheap memory units, it's not going to happen. One approach could be pre-coded bubble-jet printed circuits that could be read like solid state drives by non-movable parts. The movie data could be encoded, printed and seal in a USB connected device. In fact, the USB device could be little more than a sleeve with the common necessary electronics for reading the data and the movie could be a printed insert placed in the sleeve (very much like a Sony memory stick adapter). The bubble jet printing method used to create functional, flat circuits using silicon and semiconductor material in the bubble jets has been around for quite a while. You might be onto something here! Heck, they used to the same technology to make a human ear! So why not?!
