Bed Energy
Posted 06/15/2008 by zboston3 in Other | Submit idea in this category
Do you toss and turn in bed, do you have restless legs, do you have insomnia?  The fact is that many people do not sleep like a log, lying there all night unmoving.  They toss and turn, they roll, they shake, and that's just the ones who are asleep.  There's a lot of energy there.

I believe some places have installed pressure sensitive pads under rugs and mats where a lot of people walk.  The idea being that all that pounding is converted into electrical energy that can be used for other things.

Well, why not do it for beds.  Something that would capture all the energy you're producing for 8 hours a night and then send it along to run the radios, the lights, the computers.

Institutions like hotels, college dorms, prisons might have a whole new source of energy to help with their bills.

And after beds you could move on to other furniture - theatre seats, bus and car seats, the Lazy-Boy!

A friend of mine was working on a project putting electrical generators in shoe soles to generate electricity as you walk.  I don't know the details, but you probably could apply similar technology to anything (say a piece of furniture) that was being jostled.  Of course, the electricity generated might be negligible. . .

Well, it might motivate more people to use the bed for more "vigorous" activity for the green cause. ;o)
