FM Transmitter built into portable MP3 (PMP) Players
Posted 2 months ago by mhunter in Music | Submit idea in this category
I've been using a plug-and-play FM Transmitter to pump my MP3 player's music through my car speakers for years, being that my car radio doesn't have any tape player or auxiliary inputs.

With the new iPod and Zune's both being equipped with wireless access, and the Zune even having HD Radio, how hard would it be to put a simple FM Transmitter built into the devices so you could output the audio to any speaker set as long as it has a radio.

(I realize the downside would be loss of income from docking stations and proprietary output cables)

Sounds like a good idea to me! The electronics should be easy enough. Maybe there's an issue with FCC regs that makes it cost prohibitive for the original manufacturer. Strange, the third party companies that make all the dongles and cables and such don't seem to have a problem.

mhunter (2 months ago): I tend to believe if the manufacturer, say Apple, put an FM transmitter in their new iPod, sales of all FM transmitters available for iPod would go into the toilet. It's the same reason why Samsung and other brands don't standardize on mini USB - they make a ton of money selling their own proprietary cables and adapters.

However, it just takes one manufacturer to do this to get an edge up on the market, and the others would surely follow suit...
