Cell Phones - Speech to Text
Posted 05/07/2008 by toolguy16 in Cell Phones | Submit idea in this category
We already have speakerphones on almost all cell phones, and that prevents a lot of accidents. Speaker-texting, or speech to text, should be the next focus of cell phone manufacturers.

People can't even text and walk, nevermind text and drive. They end up swerving, driving slow, or rolling through red lights. There's even a new law in my town concerning texting while driving.

If cell phones could use the same speech recognition that computers use, then users could say their text message and just quickly glance at it for accuracy. How about the phone even reading incoming text messages aloud?

A friend of mine just got the Nexus One that runs on Android, and we were able to experiment with the speech-to-text capabilities... you were right, it saves a lot of time and was surprisingly accurate!!

If you're going to do speech to text, why not just call the person?

pete (7 months ago): Very good point, but if someone is trying to relay a message without going through a phone conversation, this feature might be useful.

There's an app for that! On the iPhone. It's not perfect, but it's functional. Actually, there are a handful of them. Check out uqueary.com, the free appstore search engine.

That sounds good, almost commonsensible.  I wonder if the Japanese have come up with something like that.
