Put spending limitations/restrictions on campaign advertising
Posted 06/06/2008 by micampbell in Politics | Submit idea in this category
To begin to remove the business side of politics and end the PR/Marketing campaigns that are elections now. I think that putting spending limits and/or restrictions on the amount of money a campgain can raise and spend on traditional advertising would be beneficial on many levels.

1.  Less time raising capital, more time debating/discussing/meeting voters

2.  No more 'Attack Ads'

3.   Individuals may be more inclined to research candidates themselves, without barraged by accusations, retaliations, and so on.

4.  Money could be put to better use...helping people who actually need it.  I would imagine that the amount of money spent on most campaings rivals that spent on public education....If they haven't met yet, It won't be long.  (campaign spending up and up, school spending down and down)

I know there are a lot of loopholes here and it would be difficult/impossible to enforce, but something has to change about our electoral process and I think that this is a rational idea.

zboston...you want to completely eliminate the primaries all together? How would you suggest each party picks their own candidate...out of a hat?

I agree that the primary system needs to be changed, but to say they need to be done away with doesn't make much sense at all.

Both Micampbell zboston3 it nails on the head. The amount of money spent on the  present campaigns has exceeded a billion dollars. Where did that money come from and what return of their "investment"  do the big doners expect?  And as zboston3 noted, the Primaries, espeially in a nation-wide Presidential election are illogical. There should be a uniform set of rules for Presidential candidates.  I hope it's alright to include a URL here. Please, both of you see http://www.qwetz.com/home.htm.  I look forward to more of your comments. robertr.

After the most recent experiences in the past few elections, I'd like to see primaries done away with.  Think of the money that has been spent, the work that has gone into raising and spending it, and of course, these primaries are run by, paid for by, the states they're held in.  Even if you belong to the opposite party you're still giving your tax dollars to help select someone you may never vote for.  Enough already.
